Shumway Family

Condolences for the family of Keith Shumway may be posted here or emailed to Shumway-family@leavitt.com.

Keith graduated in May from Southern Utah University with a bachelors degree in chemistry with a medical emphasis. He was in the process of applying to medical school with a dream of becoming a doctor and setting up a practice in a rural area.

On August 19, 2005 he married his eternal companion Lisa in the Salt Lake Temple. They welcomed Landon Austin into their family on May 12, 2008. He was a loving and caring husband and daddy and one of the greatest friends a person could have.

Lisa graduated from SUU in December 2005 with a bachelors degree in accounting and worked for Kohler and Eyre until Landon was born.

If desired, contributions can be made to the Keith Shumway Memorial Fund at any Wells Fargo Bank or at any Mountain America Credit Union.

To Lisa and the rest of the Shumway crew, my heart is absolutely broken for you. Keith was one of my all-time closest friends. He was very special to me and I loved him so much, as I know all of you did. All my thoughts and prayers are with you now and in the future. Please let me know if there is anything I can do to help with the funeral or any other way I can be of service to you. Once again, may the Lord give you comfort through this.

I know there isn't anything I can say to provide much comfort in this unfathomably difficult time, and there certainly isn't anything I can do to bring Keith back.

I received the awful news on Saturday morning by text message. I could not believe it. Then I saw the news and the pictures and descriptions. I've been struggling with this news all day long and want the Shumway family - especially Keith's wife - that I am mourning along with you.

I played basketball with Keith on Wednesday evening. It is shocking that living, breathing, full of life Keith was smiling and competing and playing basketball on Wednesday and now he's gone. The event (basketball) is so insignificant, and yet it was because of basketball that I met Keith, and over a period of about a year and a half, I became good friends with Keith. He and I spent a lot of time after each basketball night talking about the game, life, his wife and new baby, his church callings, and many other things.

I didn't realize how good a friend of mine he was, until now, because now I know how much I already miss him. I know the entire group of friends and ball players all liked Keith. We all observed that even on the basketball court he walked uprightly and lived his religion. Keith never did anything to be ashamed of and it was clear that he was faithful to God and to his family. Keith lived his life as an example to me that it is possible to be a good, humble, righteous, upright family man of God, and that's the way I'll remember Keith.

I will miss him. I will mourn him. And so will the rest of Keith's friends and family. But you have to know that Keith is smiling and cheering people up on the other side, and I think he would want all of us to hold out faithful, do the Lord's work, and to be happy.

My prayers are with all involved.

Keith is my brother-in-law. He married my baby sister. You couldn't have asked for a more special man. He adored my sister and absolutely loved his 3 mo. old son - more than words could ever come close to expressing. We are all aching very much and are so appreciative for the words of support, your prayers, those of you who have called the temple prayer roll and most importantly, for your love. We need all the help we can get right now, especially Lisa and the baby.

Keith was my brother-in-law and was a wonderful husband to my sister. I had moved away to Arkansas to be with my family and didn't know Keith personally. In fact the first time I met him was the day he married my sister. But what I do know of Keith is he made my sister smile. He loved her and he loved Landon. He took care of them and they were his life. I know he will watch over his family from above. Thank you to everyone for your thoughts and prayers. They mean so much to our family now at this time.

I love you Lisa and Landon.

Keith Shumway was a truely remarkable person. The part of his life that he shared with me was one of kindness and service to his fellow men. He helped me believe in myself and showed me how to draw closer to my Savior. Keith and I shared some common struggles in life and have often confided in each other. Although not in this life, I know that the statement that I made the last time I saw him that "we will see each other later" is true. May the Lord bless his dear wife Lisa and is wonderful son Landon. My family and I will miss the trips to Mexico and Hawaii, the premed get-togethers, the dinners, the rounds of golf and the stops for food after, and other events but the things that will be most missed is the person who would come over to hold all the stuffed animals for my daughter with a smile and the worthy priesthood holder that would come over for a blessing whenever called. Thank you my friend.

Dear Families,
I was deeply saddened by your losses. As I sit by the computer reading about the accident, my 10 year old son, David said "We know how that feels". We, too, lost someone in an automobile accident in October of last year. My heart goes out to you and you are all in our prayers. I did not directly know any of your loved ones, but I know the niece and cousin of two of them. I can promise you that several things will happen. You will feel the Love and Comfort of Our Heavenly Father and Savior during this time period. They will not forsake you. Please cling to that fact and know that They and your loved ones are near. Families ARE forever and you will see them again and they are waiting for you on the other side. Your heart will break at times, but your hearts will also soar. Sweet memories will crowd your mind and you will be comforted. Your community and state are praying for you and this will also strengthen you when the times are tough. Asking why does not help much, but being still does. Know that you all are in many people's prayers and hearts and you are not alone. May Father's richest blessings be poured out upon you during this time and in the future while you carry on.
With love and understanding,

I remember coming up from St. George with my roommate to visit your family while I was in college. I thought Keith was just the cutest! I remember asking his name, and because he couldn't really say his "th" sound yet, it came out as Keef, so that's what I called him: "Keef" and he would just giggle like crazy when I did. Lisa,

I am so sorry for your loss. Keith was probably one of the people that I was most close with in high school. We did everything in school together. Cross Country, Band, Sterling Scholars, track, indoor track, playing basketball after track, seminary council, popsicle runs, etc. We were the distance studs! One thing I always admired about Keith was his fierce intensity. He was passionate about everthing that he did. Probably one of my most favorite memories of Keith was that of him running in the 4x400 meter relay that took 1st at the state meet. He was so excited and happy. It was a great day for him. I had many great days with Keith! When I felt like I didn't have a friend in the world Keith was always there. I know that he loves you and Landon very much. You are in my prayers. I will always miss my best friend. Keith, I can't wait to see you again!

Lisa & Shumway Family,
Words can not express what a wonderful person you have lost. I was very close friends with Keith during high school and after. We ran track together, studied and played hard together. When I think of him, I think of his big smile, warm heart, red hair, but mostly his loving spirit. He was always there when you needed him and always someone you could trust and rely on. He would always say he would not live long, not wanting to believe him, I would tell him he was wrong. Keith knew early in life that he would not live a long life. He was a man with passion and fight. If he set his mind to it he would accomplish it. Knowing this I know how Keith lived his life and know he is happy he is right now. He will be taken care of. We will miss Keith deeply. Jamie Watson Schnegelberger

To the Shumway Family,

You probably don't know me, but I am deeply saddened by the your loss of Keith. He was a friend with whom I was well acquainted. I first met him at Boy's State in 1999 and learned him to be a devoted person who was courageous enough to lead and humble enough to follow. We crossed paths in after our missions in Cedar City. We played basketball a couple of times. If I remember correctly, he worked at Stock building supply. We went to many single adult activities when Keith was present and we would always greet each other. I pray that Keith's wife will be strong and blessed with the comforting Spirit of the Lord during this difficult time. We love you and are praying for you. We will be in attendance at the Memorial tonight.

I am very blessed to be Keith's cousin and to have so many good memories of him and our wonderful family. We have a great heritage, and Keith certainly did his part in upholding and continuing it. I was able to get to know him better when he spent time with my younger brothers. Even though I am quite a bit older than him, he taught me so much from his cheerful personality, example, and humble attitude. It was always fun to be around him. The song 'A Window to His Love' comes to mind when I think of Keith. He emulated love and shared truth wherever he went. Even though I didn't get to see him often, I will miss him. I will cherish the good times and smile to myself when I think of him. I have faith that we will be together again as families forever. I know Keith would not have agreed to a shortened life before he came here unless he had the assurance that Lisa, Landon and the rest of his family would be strengthened, cared for and watched over in his absence. Heavenly Father will bless and comfort you. Tyler and I both send our love, prayers, and sympathy. Keep in touch. Danene

Keith is my oldest sister's baby boy!
It occurred to me, that every mental image I have of Keith, has that beautiful "Keith" smile. As I have read all of the wonderful comments, I realized that everyone noticed it. It seems to me that the Good Lord gathered ten amazing people together in one place to call them all home. All I can say, is that I KNOW HE is in charge, and always way ahead of us, and one fine day, we will also understand however; for now, that will have to be an area to exercise faith. Lisa, I know there is only two reasons why Keith would ever want to turn down the Lord's call, and that would only be to remain here with you and Landon. I'm sure, Keith will keep a watchful eye on you both anyway! Please know you have a HUGE family ALWAYS here for you and Landon, and we love you! Please keep close to us. Our hearts and prayers are with you.

Dear Family, Our hearts are sad that Keith is no longer with us here on earth but we know that the Lord will buoy us up as we accept His will. We loved having Keith stay with us, after his mission, here in Alaska. We will miss his strong spirit, work ethic, sense of humor and kindness. I am sure the guys will share work, fishing and other stories if you ask. Our love and prayers are with you.

Lisa, I have thought of you so much these past few days. We have lost touch since my freshman year of college when you were roommates with Monica, but I want you to know how much I love you and am praying for you. Keith was the Elders Quorum President of my first college ward and was an impressive leader. I think he was loved by all the girls in Manzanita B that year because he helped us out so much and always with a smile. He had a lot to deal with, but he rose to the challenge.
You are in my prayers!
Love, Traci (Marsh) Martinez

Lisa,

Having known Keith in High School and as your husband I too can attest to the great person he has always been, and will continue to be. Being able to work with you the past few years I've seen the love and care that defined your marriage and how you both put your faith in Christ; attributes for which I have tremendous respect and that I know will help provide comfort and healing.

Please know you and Landon are in my thoughts and prayers, as well as those of all of us here at the office we are ready to help with anything you need.

Sincerely,

Ben Beckstead

To Lisa, Landon, and the Shumway Family:
I am saddened to hear the news about Keith. I was one of Lisa's roommates during college. I was able to see Keith and Lisa's relationship from the beginning. You could tell that they were truly meant to be. He was such a great guy to her and I could see how happy he made her. The world will not be the same without him. My prayers and thoughts are with you at this troubling time. I know he will be watching over his family and they will all be together again someday. Lisa: I am so terribly sorry. Love, Camille Dumas

I, like perhaps many, am finding it very hard to sleep at night because of the events that have transpired. It's one of those things you just hope will somehow reverse itself, and yet, the difficulty remains. This tragedy has proven to be a spider web; it has affected so many people. I had no idea it would affect me this much but such is the tribute to Keith. I only knew him for a year or so, but it took even less time than that for Keith's friendship, laugh, competitive nature, and smile to work its way in. Like all have attributed, Keith's smile and personality could permeate anything or anyone, and now we see the proof.

I'd like to offer a few more memories about Keith in addition to what I already posted earlier, as many comments about how Keith performed as an athlete have jogged more memories.

Among my group, Keith was known as "The Keithdozer." He earned this nickname himself by the way he maneuvered his stout, guard-like frame around on the basketball court. You see, when Keith would set a fair pick on you without your knowledge and without your teammates bringing it to your attention, you would find yourself colliding with what felt like the blade of a bulldozer. And when Keith drove hard down the lane towards the hoop, all he needed to do was get his inside shoulder around his defender and it would normally result in a bucket; there was no stopping Keith once he was in front of you on his way to the basket. I rarely saw Keith prone on the court because he usually always won the physics battle. He had the type of frame that he was able to be a very durable and reliable athlete. Thus, the name Keithdozer was born. It was assigned to Keith by us, who wore it with the same smile everyone is now so aware of.

I have many fond memories of the way Keith played on the court. I had opportunities to work with him as a teammate and also as a defender. In fact, due to our similar heights, we were often assigned to guard each other. Keith never let me score easily and always regretted it when I did, just as I always regretted it when he scored against me.

Keith had his favorite moves on offense. He liked to pick a spot on the low post, get the ball, fake the defender one way and turn and shoot the turnaround-jumper the other way. It was amazing how he would work this play against taller defenders and manage to score, even when we knew what was coming. Keith also liked to pass the ball to the wing and then kick in the "relay sprinter" speed on his way to the hoop. He is one of the few players that realized the value of the give-and-go play and he worked it often for lay-ups. Keith was also aware of how to run the pick-and-roll and he always tried to work that play in; if you came up to pick his man, he would always reward you by looking for the pick and roll.

It was also always laborious to chase Keith up and down the floor. Once Keith got a step on you it was pretty much a hopeless cause to chase him down to defend the play. Thus he spent a lot of time getting easy lay-ups by beating people like me down the floor. The last time he played with us, he scored several lay-ups in a row and nearly won the game by himself.

And who can forget the jib-jabs that he would give and take on the court? Keith had one player's number, and that same player had Keith's number, so when the game got boring, Keith and this other player would start jabbing each other and making friendly comments back and forth, which would inevitably always lead to a 1-on-1 battle between the two. Keith should have been overmatched but he always stepped up his game, shooting percentage, and scoring during these battles. Half the time the rest of us were laughing and half the time we were amazed at the plays going back and forth in front of us. Anyone who trash talked or who half-jabbed at Keith here or there could expect that he would let you have it with a barrage of mid range jumpers, quick lay-ups, or 3-point set shots. He was neither tall nor short, and yet he, through his will to compete - as others have mentioned - was a successful basketball player.

I get to keep in my mind all of the plays he and I connected on as teammates throughout our many games on the court. I always appreciate players who try to make plays on the court, and who try to think as much as they play. Keith was one of those guys. He knew a good play from a bad play. If he made a mistake, he would motivate himself to nullify it by playing harder and smarter on the next play. I have many memories of just "feeling" out some plays with Keith which resulted in points and mutual success. The last connection we made on the court was when I had the ball at the top of the key and he was just a bit out from the low post. At the same instant, he and I realized that his defender turned his head for a split second. I was already zipping the ball to where I knew Keith would be. He intercepted the back-door bounce pass in perfect time and scored his easy, "dump over the front of the rim-style" lay-up. A simple high-five later and we were already thinking about the next play.....

Keith would repeat his efforts each time - time and time again - on the court until he didn't have any more energy in his frame to give. When Keith was done, you knew it, because he didn't have anything left to give. Truly, in basketball, he left it all out on the court.

A keen observer will learn a lot about a man from sports. This was who I discovered Keith to be. Because of the way he was on the court (where I knew him), I was able to know what kind of person he was off the court (where you all knew him). After reading this blog and thinking about Keith's life, he truly did leave it all on the court. And he left everything on the court of life as well. His best plays on the court of life were that he unequivocally and unconditionally loved the Lord, the Church, his wife, his new baby, his friends, and his family. Keith left no question as to what kind of man he was. What a blessing it is to have known this man. What a blessing it is to hear everyone discuss his life.

One wise man once told me to "always live your life in such a way that your integrity will never be questioned." I believe Keith somehow knew this same wise man and followed that counsel throughout his life. The hard thing is that you are all physically without him, but the blessing is that you are all left with no doubts. I have no doubt that Keith's mortal life and immortal life are one and the same. He is now in the Lord's med school, where there is always a passing grade, and where he is learning to heal souls without the use of the knife or the pill. And in those brief moments of free time, I imagine he is still throwing paper balls at someone to get them to smile; and talking with other athletes about Utah Jazz basketball. And who can have any doubt that, like many others, he isn't anxiously waiting for that blessed reunion with his friends and family? I'm sure Keith has peace. We'll have it also, in time. May this blog and may each passing day transform what happened from terrible tragedy to a celebration of this man's life.

I am going to miss him. And I know a whole bunch of other players who will miss him as well. We have retired his jersey but it will always hang in the rafters of our minds.

Thanks for the good example, Keith. Well done buddy.

To the Shumway Family,
You have my deepest sympathy in the loss of you husband and father. Keith was a great person, a great student, and an even greater friend. I enjoyed playing basketball with him, hearing his views on who the Utah Jazz should trade and what they need to work on to get to the Finals. Hearing the stories he told about his son demonstrated to me the love and pride he had for his family. Yes he will be missed on the court, but we always have our memories to remember the good time. Much love to you in this time of hardship. May God comfort you and all of us.

This loss has hit my husband, Abe, and I hard. We have only known Keith for the last year or so while we have been in the ward with him, but much less time than that is sufficient to have grown to love him. That famous, wonderful smile of his features in every memory that I have of him. When I think how full of life and joy he was, it seems almost impossible that his life has moved on to another place where we cannot reach it.

Abe knew Keith better than I did, as they worked together as leaders for the 11-year-old scouts in our ward. They were supposed to take the boys on a hike Saturday morning, the morning after the accident. Because of this we were notified early Saturday morning, and have been thinking of little else and grieving ever since.

Abe was also one of the Shumway's home teachers for a short time. I remember that he visited soon after Landon was born. After he came home I asked how everybody there was, and I remember how warmly he told me about how happy Keith and Lisa were to have their baby, and to have time to spend together and with him.

Keith was at my house just three days before the accident. He and Abe had been doing scouts, and Abe brought them back here briefly so that he could find something they needed. The kids and I had just barely found the first ripe tomatoes in our garden, and Keith stood there in my dining room smiling as I told him about how our first garden was doing. He told me about the garden his family had growing up, and how he remembered always weeding and especially, picking many tomatoes. Even though he recalled how hard the work was, you could tell the memory was fond, and he said that he looked forward to a time when he lived someplace where he and his own family could have a garden.

I also remember listening to him in the next room as he talked to and encouraged the scout that was with them, and showed enthusiasm as my two kids asked for attention and showed off their favorite toys. It's so hard to believe that he was just here, and now he is gone.

Lisa, I think about and pray for you and Landon constantly. May the Lord carry you through this time, and may the realization of His wonderful love be enough to sustain you through this and other hard times to come. Know that we loved Keith, we love you and Landon, and that we would do anything for you.

With love and prayers,
Abe and Tia Fawson

From "The Birth We Call Death" by Paul H. Dunn and Richard M. Eyre:

In a beautiful blue lagoon on a clear day, a fine sailing-ship spreads its brilliant white canvas in a fresh morning breeze and sails out to the open sea. We watch her glide away magnificently through the deep blue and gradually see her grow smaller and smaller as she nears the horizon. Finally, where the sea and sky meet, she slips silently from sight; and someone near me says, "There, she is gone!"

Gone where? Gone from sight---that is all. She is still as large in mast and hull and sail, still just as able to bear her load. And we can be sure that, just as we say, "There, she is gone!" another says, "There she comes!"

I was just thinking about a memory of Keith that really makes me smile. We were over at Kim and Neil's house one night, and I can't remember what, but Neil was frustrated with something so he was being kind of grouchy. Then Keith comes over, and it was obvious Neil wasn't happy, but he just comes in, smiling that big smile of his and starts joking around and teasing Neil and pretty soon Neil was all happy and goofing around too. Keith was just infectious :)

We, too, have sweet memories of Keith. Several of our kids enjoyed Keith on the track team. I especially remember the "bird" incident with Brooke! Philip also enjoyed Keith's company as they compared elk sheds and talked of hunting adventures. We have a favorite poem that helps us through our challenges. It goes like this:
My life is but a weaving
Between the Lord and me.
I cannot choose the colors.
He worketh steadily.
Oft times He weaveth sorrow,
And I in foolish pride,
Forget He sees the upper,
And I, the underside.
The dark threads are as needful,
In the weaver's skillful hand,
As the threads of gold and silver
In the pattern He has planned.
Not 'til the loom is silent
And the shuttles cease to fly,
Shall God unroll the canvas
And explain the reason why.
You are in our thoughts and prayers. We will also always remember Keith's smile and example.
Love, Ken and Lori Tuttle

There are no words that can truly make you feel better at this time I didn't know Keith personally but I know the hurt you are feeling. I lost my husband a few years ago and have a little boy and I know that life does go on, even when you don't want it to the clock keeps on ticking, but I do know that the Lord is with all of you. He knows your pain and he will comfort you and he will give you peace. I am so sorry that you have to go through such a tramatic thing in your life, but if it is of any comfort to you, Life will get better I know it will! Just keep living everyday for your son and you will be okay. How grateful I am for greater knowledge and to have a Savior that is there to comfort us in our darkest hours. May you feel his love. And even though I don't know you personally please know you are in my thoughts and prayers!

I have been trying to think of the first time I met Keith. I think it was about five years ago when he came camping with me and some friends. Keith was a friendly and warm guy and shortly after meeting him you felt like you had known him for life. He was so fun to be around. I'm one of the guys that played basketball with Keith. We would get in little trash talking one on one battles, as an earlier poster had mentioned. It didn't matter how he had been shooting the rest of the night, once we starting gaurding each other he wouldn't miss a shot. It was fun to rib on each other a little and watch Keith just smile and laugh as he made some incredible shots. As good as Keith could be on the court during those times, he was an even a better person. He was always a great example and friend. I will really miss Keith but will also appreciate the chance I had to know him. Remembering Keith has made me want to be a better person. Someone a little more like Keith. My Prayers are with his family.

I didn't know Keith well, but in the time that I have gotten to know you, I have gotten to know Keith through you. As many have said, the first thing that strikes you about Keith is his smile. Always there, always genuine.

I know it may not feel it now, but you are strong. You are one of the strongest women I an honored to know. I have seen that strength in the choices that you have made for your family and for yourself.

Although I don't profess to have strong religious beliefs, I know this...God knows you have the strength to get through this, for yourself and most especially Landon. He would not put this upon you if He didn't think you were able.

Keith's time here was way to short, but from what I have read and what I have learned from you, his life was full. If only we would all make our lives so full of love and life...what a wonderful world we might have.

I feel that maybe Keith did what he was here to do and was time to go Home. He married the love of his life, helped to create his legacy in Landon with you and touched the lives of others with his love and compassion. Maybe this tragedy will lead to greater things...for all we know Landon may choose to follow in his father's footsteps and lead a full and loving life that touches so many or even find the cure for Cancer.

Just know that while you may not have family by way of blood or name here in Cedar City, but you do have family of the heart.

You are in my heart and in my prayers.
